Farewell from Fr John Cummins

Thank You

It’s hard to believe that it was 17 years ago that I came to Carlow as Chaplain in the Institute of Technology. After 5 years there, I moved into the parish as curate and a year later became Administrator.  Time has passed so quickly, and I have gained many memories, experiences and friendships.

As I take my leave, I’d like to thank the people of Carlow for making me extremely welcome in these years and for sharing so much of your lives with generosity and love.  I leave Carlow enriched by your example of care and compassion, dedication and courage, patience and joy.  Above all, your faith has sustained and encouraged me.  Thank you for (hopefully!) making me a better person and a better priest; thank you for your prayers and your support.

I’ve been privileged to work with many committed people in the parish on our many committees and groups, and among those who volunteer; they cheerfully serve our community without seeking reward or recognition, and I am truly grateful to them for too many things to mention.  I’m deeply appreciative of the dedicated parish staff and those on our CE scheme, with whom I’ve worked every day; they have been a tremendous support to me in the day to day running of the parish.  Buiochas mor libh go leir.

I’ve been very lucky to work with many fine women and men in Carlow, not least the various members of the parish team over the years, together with Bishops Larry Ryan, Jim Moriarty and Denis Nulty and Mgr Brendan Byrne, whose wisdom, encouragement and guidance were always present.

I’m very grateful for your good wishes and prayers as I move on, and I wish Frs Ruairi, Brian, Martin, Sister Dolores and Deacon David all God’s blessings in their ministry.

Most of all, I thank all who are part of this community of faith, who come to pray and to worship God. It has been my privilege to have lived among you these past 17 years and to share in the life of the Cathedral community, its joys and celebrations, sorrows and tears.  It has been an honour and a blessing. Thank you.

Keep me in your prayers, as I will keep you in mine.  May the God of joy and light fill you and your families with his presence and hold you close to his heart
